In regards to the letter below, we do carry the Orson Scott Card product, as well as products of writers and artists of many different beliefs and affiliations. We do so because we believe in the right of free speech, not because we agree with the views of any individual writer or artist.
In addition to that, Read More Comics in no way endorses Mr. Card's views. We will always support and provide comics to the gay community with no prejudice or discrimination.
Thank You,
Scott Rienbeck, Owner
On May 29th, DC Comics will be releasing the new Adventures of Superman written by Orson Scott Card. As you may know, Mr Card is an award-winning writer and a board member of the National Organization for Marriage, a group that is viciously anti-GLBTQ and have made it their jobs to define marriage and the general civil rights of Americans everywhere.
They seek to not only have gay marriage banned in the United States (as well as having a foothold in the recent French Marriage Debate) but believe that basic rights should also be banned or limited; hospital visitation, adoption, parenting, jobs, housing, discrimination protections, religious services, access to state funded programs, and military services are all among their list of hate speech. The National Organization for Marriage has routinely called GLTBQ peoples pedophiles, rapists, Satanists, gang members, terrorists, and any other generic anti-American term they can think of, while demanding the imprisonment, and often death penalty, for any GLBTQ peoples or their supporters.
Mr Cards employment is a slap in the face from a publisher that is responsible for one of the most pro-American characters ever created. Superman has defended the rights of millions, protected the poor and the vilified, and often been the voice of reason during times of political and social discourse in our nation.
As a gay man, frequent client of your stores, and avid comic reader for the past two decades, I hope that you will consider refusing to stock this title, as well as any other publications by Orson Scott Card as I believe that his hate-speech does not belong on your shelves.
I have NOTHING negative to say about RMC, always having a positive shopping experience. Super-friendly and helpful staff and have everything I need in stock. What blew me away was the comics are already pre-boarded and bagged at no extra cost! I haven't seen that at any other store. To help put into perspective, I have a shop (Coliseum comics) right down the street from my home, but would prefer to travel approx. 1 hour to RMC. Keep up the great work, RMC!! I wish more shops were like you.
Truly a wonderful store. Cannot believe the ridiculously large selection of hard and softcover trade books!
Read More has got to be the best Comic Store I have ever been to! Scott and Sean are some of the nicest employees that I have ever seen in a comic shop, always willing to discuss the newest stuff with you, and let your browse through comics in the shop with out signs ever 12 inches reminding you not to. You guys always have everything Im looking for, and if not you order it for me. Definatly my comic shop of choice. Any one looking for a new permenant store, here it is.
Absolutey love this store, they really do have the largest collection in Tampa Bay, and the best people behind the register. You guys are always helpful and friendly, both in-store and over the phone. I've had my best shppng experiences with finding a certain product, getting some information, and just having a healthy enviroment to shop in, unlike some other stores in the Tampa Bay area. I'm going to always bring my business to RMC and keep up the great work in satisfying your customers!
I am from Massachusetts and was visiting a friend in Tampa area. I mentioned to him that I had a hard time locating this graphic novel (gn). He said "I know some guys who will have it". We then rode to Read More Comics in Brandon. When I walked into there and saw all the graphic novels and comics on hand, was like "holy ****!" Sure enough, You guys had the GN I was looking for. I wish I bought a couple more while I was there. You guys have an awesome shop with a great inventory. I wish I brought more money to spend because I would have!
The guy running the place at the time (Just remember he was a DC fan) was friendly and helpful. Next time I am in the area I will definitely be stopping by with some more cash to buy stuff.
I am entering a contest for me and Scott to appear on the variant cover of a Star Trek comic. I would be a Red Shirt taking a phaser blast for Scott, who would be a Kirk Shirt. Below is the email I sent to apply for it:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I have been going to Read More Comics in Brandon FL for two decades. Scott Rienbeck is the best retailer I have ever dealt with. Anytime I want a comic, it is almost always there. If it happens to not be there, he’ll get it to me in a flash – whether it’s a DC title, Star Trek, Dark Shadows – whatever I want to read. And although he is mainly a “Marvel Guy” himself, he always engages in conversations with me about Green Lantern and other DC heroes. He strongly rebukes his employees about saying any negative Green Lantern comments. He will subtly let his customers know that I am a huge GL fan if they start any GL disses.
He went out of his way to see the midnight premier showing of GREEN LANTERN in 3D IMAX in faraway Tampa with me back in June, even though he would have preferred to see it locally. I look forward to going to Read More Comics on Thursday, just to chat with Scott and whoever is in the store.
Some stores have huge inventories, and are like museums of figures and so forth. But nothing replaces the personal touch. When I go to Read More Comics, I know Scott is going to be glad to see me – as a customer, and as a friend. He has great parties at his store on Free Comics Day, New Year’s Eve, and “Black Friday”. Everyone has a good time. There are a lot of comic book “geeks” who have no lives. But, for a while at least, they come alive like Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern, at a Read More Comics event.
If I was in Read More Comics, and some loony tried to shoot Scott, I would take a bullet for him. Or a phaser blast.
Thank you for your attention, and live long and prosper,
Thom “No Evil Shall Escape My Sight” Miller
